How professionalisation in citizen science is a limitation to researcher-activist participation

At the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) General Conference at the University of Innsbruck, some MSSRG members have been presenting on their latest research. This includes Ben McAteer and Wesley Flannery, who participated in a session titled 'Researcher-Activists and their role in neoliberal environmental governance'.

They presented their work on the professionalisation of the participatory research approach of citizen science, which will feature in an upcoming book on knowledge co-production. The presentation assesses the evolution of citizen science and documents evidence of how an increasingly professional model is impacting the transformative potential of some projects.
